Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy for Children with Autism

What is Occupational Therapy?

Children spend their days playing, learning, building relationships, and developing independence through everyday activities. Challenges with motor skills, sensory processing, attention, emotions, behavior, or thinking can sometimes make these activities more difficult.

Occupational therapists assess a child’s strengths and areas of need and provide individualized strategies and activities to support development and participation at home, school, and in the community. Occupational therapy helps children build skills, confidence, independence, and a sense of accomplishment as they engage more successfully in the activities that matter most to them.

Occupational Therapy at Journey:

Children in the Journey Therapy Center Day Program receive 2–4 individualized occupational therapy sessions each week in our dedicated OT spaces. Using a play-based approach, our OTs support sensory processing, motor development, self-regulation, and daily living skills in ways that are engaging, supportive, and empowering.

Our OTs work closely with the child’s care team to integrate sensory supports, self-regulation strategies, and motor skill development into everyday routines—helping children build confidence, independence, and meaningful participation throughout their day.
