A formal autism diagnosis opens doors to a better future. We can help!

Perhaps you suspect your child might be on the autism spectrum – or maybe his or her school has already determined that to be the case. Would it be beneficial to get a formal diagnosis?

Journey Therapy Center founder Claudia Leandres says absolutely!

“A diagnosis (DX) opens doors for services,” said Claudia. “Without a DX from a medical professional, clients cannot get services paid by insurance. A school DX is not valid. Insurance does not see an educational DX as ‘real.’ They are not qualified to give a DX. So, it literally opens doors, such as unlimited speech and OT therapy, as well as ABA therapy. There are no limits in services when there is a MEDICAL ASD DX.”

Where you should go to get your child a diagnosis can vary, based on your insurance, but Journey can help.

“The best option is to get in touch with us, and we will refer them to a provider in the network for that family’s insurance,” said Claudia.

If you’ve been wondering whether your child might be on the autism spectrum, you’re not alone. Many families have similar questions, and seeking clarity is never a bad thing. In fact, an autism evaluation can be a powerful tool for better understanding your child’s needs, whether or not they receive a diagnosis.

Here are some common signs that your child may benefit from an autism evaluation, along with reasons why getting one is a valuable step forward.

  1. Communication Differences

Your child may:

  • Speak later than peers or not at all.
  • Repeat phrases (echolalia) instead of answering questions.
  • Use few gestures like pointing or waving.
  • Seem to understand or use language differently.

Why it matters: Communication differences are often one of the earliest indicators of autism. An evaluation can help determine whether your child needs support with speech, language, or social interaction, and earlier is always better for effective intervention.

  1. Limited Eye Contact or Social Engagement

You might notice:

  • Your child avoids or has fleeting eye contact.
  • They don’t respond to their name.
  • They prefer to play alone, even around other children.
  • They seem uninterested in sharing experiences (like pointing to show you something).

Why it matters: These social communication cues are often part of how children bond and learn. Identifying and supporting these areas early can help your child build more meaningful connections over time.

  1. Intense Interests or Repetitive Behaviors

Look for:

  • Fascination with certain objects, topics, or routines.
  • Repeating the same play patterns or movements (like spinning, flapping, or lining things up).
  • Becoming very upset when routines are disrupted.

Why it matters: These behaviors aren’t “bad.” They’re often self-soothing or deeply enjoyable to the child. An evaluation can help you understand what these behaviors mean and how to support your child in navigating a flexible world.

  1. Sensory Sensitivities

You might see:

  • Strong reactions to sounds, lights, textures, or smells.
  • Avoidance of certain clothes, foods, or environments.
  • Seeking out sensory input, like spinning or crashing into things.

Why it matters: Sensory challenges can be overwhelming for a child and may lead to meltdowns or withdrawal. Occupational therapy and sensory integration strategies can make a world of difference, but first, a proper evaluation is key.

Delayed or Uneven Development

Your child may:

  • Have advanced skills in some areas and delays in others.
  • Struggle with transitions or problem-solving.
  • Show intense emotional reactions without obvious triggers.

Why it matters: Autism can present in many ways, including strengths in specific areas. A comprehensive evaluation helps highlight both challenges and unique abilities, guiding you toward support that fits your child.

Some parents hesitate to pursue an evaluation because their child “seems fine” in some settings or doesn’t have severe behaviors. But here’s the truth: Every child deserves support tailored to them. Even subtle signs can point to real struggles.

Early support is more effective. The earlier we understand what’s going on, the better we can help children grow with confidence. A diagnosis opens doors. Access to therapies, school accommodations, and insurance-covered services often hinges on formal documentation. Peace of mind is priceless, and whether the result confirms autism or rules it out, you’ll gain valuable insight and a path forward.

Parenting comes with more questions than answers, especially when your child doesn’t quite fit the mold. Seeking an evaluation isn’t about labeling; it’s about understanding.
